California Assessments

California’s statewide assessment system helps educators, families, and students monitor academic progress and English language development. It consists of two main components: the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC).

CAASPP

CAASPP measures student performance in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science. Starting in grade 3, most students take the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for ELA and Math, along with the California Science Test (CAST) in grades 5, 8, and once in high school. The California Alternate Assessments (CAAs) are available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities whose IEP team designates an alternate assessment. The California Spanish Assessment (CSA) is an optional test for students in grades 3–12 who are learning Spanish language arts/literacy.

ELPAC

ELPAC is the required state assessment for English language proficiency. It is administered to students in kindergarten through grade 12 whose primary language is a language other than English, as indicated on the Home Language Survey. The ELPAC includes both an Initial assessment (for identifying English learners) and an annual Summative assessment (to measure progress). The Alternate ELPAC is available for English learners who have the most significant cognitive disabilities and whose IEP team has determined they should take an alternate assessment.
